Apple Home vs Google Home, decided by household
Two platforms with similar device lists and completely different failure behavior.
The question that actually decides it#
Phones. Apple Home has no Android app, so an Android user in an Apple household is locked out of everything except whatever you expose to them through a shared Matter device or a voice assistant. Google Home has an iOS app that works fine, so an iPhone user in a Google household is inconvenienced rather than excluded.
That asymmetry does more work than any feature comparison. If one person in your house uses Android and needs to control the lights from their phone, Apple Home cannot be the only platform.

The outage difference, stated precisely#
This is the single largest practical gap between the two, and it is easy to underrate until it happens.
Apple runs your automations on the home hub. Unplug the internet and a motion-triggered light still fires, because the trigger, the logic and the command all stay inside the house. What you lose is Siri, remote access from outside the home, iCloud sharing and HomeKit Secure Video upload.
Google's local Matter control covers lights, plugs and switches only, rolling out from late 2025. Routines are cloud side. Gemini voice is entirely cloud side. When Google had a global outage on 18 August 2026 that lasted about twelve hours, Nest hubs were unresponsive and the houses depending on them behaved accordingly. That is not a hypothetical failure mode, it is a documented one.
Where Apple is genuinely better#
Automation reliability. Rules run locally, latency is short, and the house does not depend on a data center.
Cheap Thread hardware. A HomePod mini at $129 is the cheapest way into a decent Thread network, and Apple TV moved to Thread 1.4 in a June 2026 update, though HomePods had not as of September 2026.
No subscription for the core product. You pay for iCloud+ only if you want camera recording, and less of your home state leaves the house by default.
Where Google is genuinely better#
Voice. Gemini for Home replaced Google Assistant on speakers and displays from late 2025 into 2026, and natural-language understanding is the strongest of the mainstream platforms. If people in your house speak to the smart home in sentences rather than commands, this is a real advantage.
Cameras and doorbells. Nest hardware is a coherent lineup with good detection, and Google Home Premium at $10 a month or $100 a year (Standard) or $20 a month or $200 a year (Advanced) buys history and intelligence. The free tier includes six hours of video history. Apple's answer requires iCloud+ and a smaller camera selection. Compare in cameras and doorbells.
Android and everything else. If the household is Android, this is not a close call.
Where both are weak#
Neither has a Zigbee or Z-Wave radio. Both are Wi-Fi, Thread and Bluetooth only. If you own Zigbee sensors or Z-Wave locks, neither platform can talk to them without a second hub bridging them in, which is the arrangement described in running two platforms on purpose.
Neither has shipped Joint Fabric from Matter 1.6, so sharing devices between them still means multi-admin, one fabric each. Neither exposes useful Matter energy features. And both have a record of ending support for hardware people still own: Apple retired the legacy HomeKit architecture on 10 February 2026 and dropped iPads as home hubs, while Google cut off the 1st and 2nd generation Nest Learning Thermostat on 25 October 2025 and has shut down Dropcam and Nest Secure servers and discontinued Nest Protect. By household#
Everyone has an iPhone and you want it to just work. Apple Home. Buy a HomePod mini as the hub, keep automations simple, and accept the ceiling.
Mixed iPhone and Android. Google Home as the shared layer, or a third platform owning the devices with both ecosystems as clients. Apple Home alone will make the Android user a second-class resident of their own home.
You already own Nest cameras and a doorbell. Google Home. Migrating cameras is the most expensive kind of migration and the least likely to pay off.

Automations that have to work at 6am regardless. Apple Home, or neither. If the automation is genuinely critical, the honest answer is a locally executing controller such as Home Assistant or Hubitat with an ecosystem in front of it for voice.
Voice is the main interface, including for kids and guests. Google Home. It handles sloppy phrasing better, which matters more day to day than any specification.
Pick Apple Home if#
- Every phone in the house is an iPhone.
- You want automations that survive an internet outage without maintaining anything.
- You would rather pay nothing monthly than have more features.
- You are starting from zero and want the shortest path to a working, reliable house.
Pick Google Home if#
- Anyone in the house uses Android as their primary phone.
- You own Nest cameras, doorbells or displays already.
- Voice control is how the house is actually operated.
- You are comfortable with the fact that most of it stops when the internet does.
If you cannot decide#
You do not have to. Matter devices can be shared across both fabrics with multi-admin, so an iPhone household member and an Android one can each use their own app on the same lights. Can I use Apple Home with an Android phone?
No. There is no Android app for Apple Home, and there is no supported workaround. An Android user in an Apple Home household can only control devices that have been shared into another ecosystem through Matter multi-admin, or that respond to a voice assistant. If someone in your house uses Android as their daily phone, plan around this before buying.
Which one keeps working when the internet goes down?
Apple, by a wide margin. Apple runs automations on the HomePod or Apple TV, so triggers and rules keep firing locally. Google's local Matter control covers lights, plugs and switches only, and all routines and Gemini voice are cloud side. Google's twelve hour outage in August 2026 demonstrated exactly what that means.
Do I need a HomePod or Apple TV for Apple Home?
For automations, yes. A hub is what executes rules and provides remote access, and iPads are no longer supported for the role. A HomePod mini at $129 is the cheapest option and doubles as a Thread border router. Without a hub you can control devices while at home from your phone, but scheduled and triggered automations will not run.
Is the cheaper Apple TV a Thread border router?
No. Only the 128 GB Wi-Fi plus Ethernet Apple TV 4K 3rd generation has a Thread radio, at $249. The $199 64 GB Wi-Fi only model does not. The HomePod mini, HomePod 2 and Apple TV 4K 2nd generation are all border routers, so a HomePod mini is usually the cheaper route to Thread.
Which supports more Matter devices?
They are closer than the marketing suggests, and both lag the specification. Apple publishes no Matter version but behaves like roughly Matter 1.2 to 1.4 in the device types it supports, with air purifiers and dishwashers still missing. Google's documented device types top out at Matter 1.3. Check the specific device class you care about rather than a version number.
Does either one need a subscription?
Apple Home does not for core use; iCloud+ is only required for HomeKit Secure Video. Google Home works without a subscription for control, but camera history beyond six hours, advanced camera intelligence and the Gemini features are behind Google Home Premium at $10 or $20 a month.
Can I run both Apple Home and Google Home?
Yes, and for mixed-phone households it is often the right answer. Commission Matter devices once, then share them to the second platform with multi-admin. Keep every automation on one platform only. Two sets of routines acting on the same lights is the most common cause of unexplainable behavior.
Will my Zigbee or Z-Wave devices work with either?
Not directly. Neither Apple nor Google has a Zigbee or Z-Wave radio. You need a hub that does, such as Hubitat, Homey Pro, SmartThings with an Aeotec hub, or Home Assistant with the right dongle, and that hub then bridges the devices in as Matter accessories.
