Nine questions to answer before you buy a smart device

Every one of these has a findable answer. Devices that fail three or more are the ones people replace within two years.

How to use this#

Open the product page on your phone and work down the list. You are not looking for perfection, you are looking for the failure you cannot live with, and it is almost always in questions 3, 5 or 7.

The compatibility checker answers questions 1, 3 and 4 for a given device class, platform and connection type, and tells you what gets lost in between. Use it first, then use this page for what a tool cannot answer, like whether the thing fits in your switch box.

1. What radio does this exact model use?#

Why it matters. The radio determines how the device fails, whether it needs a hub, whether it eats Wi-Fi airtime and how long a battery lasts. It is also the answer least likely to be on the box.

The trap. The same product name frequently ships in several radio versions, with the same name and different model numbers. Hue is a range in transition: newer radios ship Matter over Thread while older stock is Zigbee only.

Where to find it. The technical specifications on the product page, the model number, and the FCC ID if all else fails. On a shelf the giveaway is the setup instructions: a device that asks for your Wi-Fi password is Wi-Fi, one that mentions a hub or bridge is Zigbee, Z-Wave or proprietary, and a Matter device that never asks for Wi-Fi credentials is Thread.

The decision rule. Battery sensors should be Thread, Zigbee or Z-Wave, never Wi-Fi. If you are buying Z-Wave in the US, confirm it is the 908.42 MHz North American variant, because regional variants are not interoperable. Which radio for which job is the full decision table.

2. Is it Matter certified, or does the box just say "works with"?#

Why it matters. Certification is what lets a device be added to more than one ecosystem and shared later. A "works with" badge is a different thing.

The distinction. There is no alliance "Works with Matter" badge. Only certified devices carry the Matter logo. The "Works with Apple Home", "Works with Google Home", "Works with Alexa" and "Works with SmartThings" badges are ecosystem programs that test the platform experience, not Matter conformance. A device can carry all four and support no Matter at all.

Where to find it. The alliance's certified product database. Search the exact model, and if it is not there it is not certified, whatever the marketing says.

The caveat. Certification is not behavior. Three shortcut paths exist, including certification by similarity, product family certification and certification transfer, under which only the original product goes through lab testing. The clearest recent example was IKEA's Matter over Thread line in early 2026, where owners reported large numbers of devices failing to pair. Works with Matter vs Matter certified decodes the shelf.

3. Does my controller support this device type today?#

Why it matters. This question produces the most returns. A device can be Matter certified, correctly implemented, and still appear in your app as a generic switch or not at all, because your platform has not implemented that device type yet.

The mechanism. Ecosystems typically take 6 to 12 months to implement a new Matter version, and far longer for specific device types. Google shipped its Matter 1.2 appliance types in September 2025, roughly 23 months after that specification. Apple Home does not support the Matter appliance device types at all. Cameras are the sharpest case: Matter 1.5 defined camera device types on 20 November 2025, and as of September 2026 SmartThings is the only major controller where a Matter camera actually works.

Where to find it. Your platform's own supported-device-type documentation, the only source that is ever current. Google, Amazon and Apple each publish one. Our Matter feature gap tracker compares specification date against shipping support per controller.

The decision rule. If your platform does not list the device type, assume it will not work properly, whatever the product page implies.

4. What do I lose compared with the vendor's own app?#

Why it matters. Matter carries a common baseline, and vendor value tends to live above that baseline. Buying a feature-rich device and then controlling it over Matter can quietly remove the reason you bought it.

The decision rule. If the feature you are paying for is not in the Matter data model, plan on running the vendor app alongside, and decide now whether that is acceptable. What Matter still cannot do is the full gap list.

5. What happens when the internet is down, and when the vendor goes away?#

Why it matters. These are the same question on different timescales, and the answer decides whether the device is an appliance or a rental.

The offline half. Matter does not guarantee local control. The alliance's own FAQ notes that Matter-only devices need an internet-connected controller for control when away from home. Google Home's local Matter control covers lights, plugs and switches only, and its global outage on 18 August 2026 lasted about twelve hours and left Nest hubs unresponsive.

The vendor half. Belkin's Wemo line shut down on 31 January 2026, taking the app and cloud features with it, including the Alexa and Google integrations. The only devices that kept working were those already paired to Apple HomeKit before that date, working locally. That good outcome from a bad event happened only because the devices supported a local protocol.

Where to find it. Look for "local control" in the documentation, check whether the device speaks a local standard rather than only a cloud API, and check the vendor's track record. 6. Does it need its own bridge, and what does that bridge cost you?#

Why it matters. A bridge is a second thing to power, update and fail, plus a permanent tax on the device's capabilities.

7. Is there a subscription, and what exactly stops without it?#

Why it matters. The subscription question has moved from cameras into the platforms themselves, and the answers changed several times in the last year. As of September 2026:

The question to ask: if I never pay, what does this device still do? For a camera the answer is often live view with no recording review. A Matter certified camera can still require a subscription, because the specification does not cover storage of footage at all.

8. Does it physically fit where it has to live?#

Why it matters. This is the most avoidable return, and it is entirely a measurement problem.

9. How does it update, and how do I get it back out?#

Why it matters. Both of these decide what the device costs you in year three.

Updates. Firmware update delivery over Matter is optional, not mandatory. As of 2026, Eve, Nanoleaf and IKEA use the alliance's distributed ledger, and the controllers that can deliver updates include Apple Home, SmartThings, Home Assistant, Google (from September 2025) and Homey (from August 2026). Not every combination works: Home Assistant Matter updates are documented as failing for Thread devices on a network with Apple border routers, because those border routers do not forward the mDNS packets needed. If the device does not update over Matter, find out which app does.

Exit. Confirm there is a physical factory reset that does not require the app, because a device you cannot reset is one you cannot sell, move or give away. Removing a device in a controller's interface does not reliably send the remove-fabric command, and devices are only required to support five fabrics, so orphaned entries accumulate until a reset clears them. How do I know if a device is really Matter certified?

Search the exact model number in the alliance's certified product database. Only certified devices carry the Matter logo, and there is no alliance "Works with Matter" badge, so a box covered in "works with" logos tells you about ecosystem programs rather than Matter conformance. If the model is not in the database, treat it as not certified.

Why does my Matter device show up as the wrong type?

Because your controller has not implemented that device type yet, so it falls back to something generic. Ecosystems typically take 6 to 12 months to implement a new Matter version and often longer for individual device types. Is a Matter device guaranteed to work locally?

How do I check whether a device will still work if the company disappears?

Ask whether it speaks a local standard or only the vendor's cloud. Wemo is the worked example: when Belkin shut the service down on 31 January 2026, the only devices that survived were those already paired to Apple HomeKit, and they kept working locally. A device with a local protocol and an on-device reset survives its vendor; a cloud-only device does not.
