The seven smart home platforms compared, and who each one is wrong for

One matrix built from a published dataset, then the part most comparisons skip: the households each platform will disappoint.

How to read this comparison#

Every column below comes from vendor documentation as of September 2026, not from marketing claims about what a platform will do next. Three notes on method before the tables.

Matter version is not a quality score. A platform on Matter 1.3 device types can be flawless for lights, plugs, locks and sensors, because those types shipped in Matter 1.0 through 1.2. Version matters when you want the newer categories: cameras in 1.5, closures and energy features in 1.4 and 1.5. Our Matter feature gap tracker separates specification date from shipping support.

"Has a Thread border router" hides the important detail. All seven can route a Thread mesh onto your LAN. What differs is which box does it, and several of those boxes look identical to models that cannot. The border router directory is the authoritative list.

Local control is scored, not asserted. The Local Control Index awards 100 points across eight criteria, with half points where behavior works but the vendor does not document it, and the rubric is published at our methodology. We score documented behavior and published incidents, not lab tests.

Where the mainstream four actually stand on Matter and Thread#

As of September 2026, no major consumer ecosystem has shipped user-facing Joint Fabric, the Matter 1.6 feature from 17 June 2026 that would let several controllers co-administer one shared fabric instead of maintaining separate ones. Until that ships, multi-admin remains a per-platform pairing chore and homes keep ending up with several Thread networks.

Who each platform is wrong for#

This is the section that should decide your purchase. Every platform below has a genuine constituency; each also has households it will quietly fail.

Apple Home is wrong for you if#

You have Android in the house, because there is no Android client and never has been. You own Zigbee or Z-Wave devices, because Apple Home speaks Wi-Fi, Thread and Bluetooth only, so those need a bridge. You want energy monitoring, effects on your Govee or Nanoleaf lights, or robot vacuum maps and no-go zones, because none of that survives the trip through Matter into Apple Home. You want conditional automation logic with variables and templates, because Apple's editor has a low ceiling. You want to export or back up your configuration, because you cannot: Apple Home scores 2.5 out of 10 on local firmware and backup control and 0 out of 10 on a local API. And you should be wary if you skipped the migration prompts, because the legacy HomeKit architecture was retired on 10 February 2026 and households that never migrated lost Home app control, automations and shared access.

Google Home is wrong for you if#

Anything in your house has to work when the internet does not. Google's local Matter control covers lights, plugs and switches only, rolling out from late 2025. Routines and all Gemini voice remain cloud side. The global outage on 18 August 2026 lasted about twelve hours and left Nest hubs unresponsive, which is the clearest demonstration available of what a Local Control Index score of 15 means in practice. It is also wrong for you if you want protocols beyond Wi-Fi and Thread, if you resent subscriptions (advanced camera intelligence, "help me create" automations and Gemini Live are paid Google Home Premium features), or if hardware longevity matters: Nest Learning Thermostat 1st and 2nd generation were cut off on 25 October 2025, and Dropcam and Nest Secure servers were shut down earlier.

Amazon Alexa is wrong for you if#

You care about local control or privacy. Alexa scores 5 out of 100, the lowest of the seven, and the deciding fact is that Amazon removed on-device voice processing on 28 March 2025, deleting the option to keep voice recordings off the cloud from the three devices that had it. There is no opt-out. It is also wrong for you if you own Z-Wave, which Alexa has never supported, or if you bought an Echo Dot or Echo Pop expecting a hub, because those models have no hub radios at all. Developers should note two retirements: the Smart Home API v2 on 1 November 2025 and Routines Kit on 13 May 2026.

SmartThings is wrong for you if#

You need documented outage behavior. Edge drivers execute on the hub, which is real local processing, but Samsung does not publish which Routines continue to run when the cloud is unreachable, which is why the score sits at 30 rather than higher. It is also wrong for you if your setup depends on the free API: Samsung is ending free SmartThings API access in October 2026, introducing a $4.99 a month Personal Plan for individual developers with commercial tiers above it. The app and basic device control stay free, but Home Assistant's SmartThings integration falls under the new plan, and Home Assistant has not said how it will handle that. Apple, Google and Amazon still offer free smart home API access. Finally, Z-Wave has historically come only from Aeotec hubs, and current Z-Wave series support is unclear enough that you should confirm before buying locks.

Home Assistant is wrong for you if#

Nobody in the household wants to be the administrator. That is the entire trade. You get Matter 1.6 support (Matter Server 9.1.0, 17 July 2026), every radio through dongles, and a Local Control Index of 100. You also get updates that occasionally require attention and a hardware bill that grew: Green is now $199 (raised from $99, with the vendor citing memory costs) and has no built-in radios at all, so add $49 for a Connect ZBT-2 or $69 for a ZWA-2. Yellow was discontinued on 15 October 2025. One nuance: the current implementation moved to a new stack in June 2026 and has not been re-certified by the alliance, so certification-based comparisons still list an older version. Both statements are true at once.

Hubitat Elevation is wrong for you if#

You are a beginner, or you want Zigbee and Thread in the same box. The standard C-8 Pro has no Thread radio, and the Thread Special Edition announced 20 August 2026 replaces the Zigbee radio with a Thread one, so you choose rather than combine. Hubitat has not stated whether the Special Edition acts as a full border router, so treat that as unconfirmed. Hubitat states Matter 1.5 support on current hubs; we could not find a certification record, so it is a vendor claim rather than a verified fact. In exchange you get rules that run on the hub in milliseconds, no subscription and an 87.5 Local Control Index, alongside a dated interface and a learning curve the vendor does not pretend away. Homey Pro is wrong for you if#

You are price sensitive, or you need the hub to join an existing Thread network. The Homey Pro 2026 forms its own Thread network and cannot join one, and commissioning runs over Bluetooth, so devices must be within BLE range of the hub when you pair them. At $449 it is the most expensive box here, and the mini at $249 drops Z-Wave, Bluetooth, infrared and 433 MHz unless you add a $69 Bridge. Its Z-Wave is 700 series, so no Long Range. And 433 MHz, one of its headline radios, is disabled in the US, Canada and South Korea for regulatory reasons. If you do need most of its radios, nothing else comes close: the Matter Bridge app turns Zigbee, Z-Wave, infrared, BLE, 433 MHz and cloud devices into Matter accessories for the other platforms, which is the cleanest legacy on-ramp available. Note also the community-reported caveat behind its 62.5 score: the mobile app periodically needs internet to reauthorize, which can lock you out mid-outage.

Deciding#

Work through these in order. The first one that applies is your answer.

  1. Does anything safety-relevant need to work offline? Heating, a lock, a garage door, a sump pump alert. If yes, your controller must run automations locally: Home Assistant, Hubitat, Homey or Apple Home. Google Home and Alexa are voice layers on top, not foundations.
  2. What radios do the devices you already own use? Count them. Z-Wave narrows you to four platforms immediately. Zigbee rules out Apple Home and Google Home as the primary controller. Which radio for which job covers the buying side, and it is far cheaper to choose a controller around the radios you own than to replace the devices.
  3. Whose phones are in the house? One Android phone makes Apple Home a poor primary, though it can still hold devices through multi-admin.
  4. Who maintains it? If the answer is "nobody", exclude Home Assistant no matter how good the score is. A platform nobody updates is worse than a cloud platform somebody else updates.
  5. What are you willing to pay per month? Camera history is where the subscriptions live: Google Home Premium at $10 or $20 a month, Alexa+ at $19.99 unless you have Prime, iCloud+ for HomeKit Secure Video, and Home Assistant Cloud at an optional $6.50.

What is the best smart home platform in 2026?

For most US households, Apple Home if everyone uses iPhone, Alexa if you want the widest device support cheaply, and Home Assistant if you want everything local. "Best" depends almost entirely on which phones your household carries, which radios your devices use, and whether anyone will maintain the system. The matrix above scores all seven on the same criteria so you can weigh those yourself.

Which smart home platform is the most reliable?

Reliability splits into two questions. For automations that keep firing when the internet drops, Home Assistant (100) and Hubitat (87.5) lead, with Apple Home (60) behind them because its automations run on the hub even though Siri does not. For day-to-day stability without maintenance, Apple Home and Alexa ask the least of you. Google Home's twelve hour outage in August 2026 is the counterexample worth remembering.

Can I use Alexa or Google for voice and something else for automations?

Yes, and it is the most common enthusiast setup. Home Assistant, Hubitat, Homey and SmartThings can all expose devices to Alexa or Google for voice while keeping the automation logic local. Matter multi-admin makes this cleaner for Matter devices. The trade is that voice still needs the cloud even when your automations do not. See running two platforms on purpose.

Does switching platforms mean rebuying my devices?

Usually not. Matter devices can be removed from one fabric and commissioned into another, and multi-admin lets you run both during a transition. Zigbee and Z-Wave devices must be excluded and re-paired, which is work but not a purchase. What you rarely keep is automations, scenes, camera history and vendor features. Switching platforms without rebuying has the order of operations.

Which platforms support Z-Wave?

Home Assistant (with a Connect ZWA-2 or another 800 series controller), Hubitat, Homey Pro and SmartThings through Aeotec hardware. Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa have never supported Z-Wave and there is no standalone Z-Wave to Matter bridge dongle, so the hub is the bridge. Z-Wave Long Range reached 125 certified devices by CES 2026, with roughly 80 percent of the certification pipeline targeting Long Range.

Do I need the newest Matter version?

Only if you want the newest device categories. Lights, plugs, locks, sensors, thermostats and blinds work on older versions. Matter 1.5 matters for cameras, and SmartThings is the only major controller shipping them as of September 2026, with launch partners Aqara, Eve and Xthings from around March 2026. Even there, the cameras were reported as not yet fully usable inside SmartThings Routines.

How much does a smart home platform cost per year?

The platform itself is usually free. The recurring costs are camera storage and premium voice: Google Home Premium at $100 or $200 a year, Alexa+ at $19.99 a month without Prime, iCloud+ for HomeKit Secure Video, Home Assistant Cloud at $6.50 a month, Homey cloud backup at $10 a year, and from October 2026 a $4.99 a month SmartThings Personal Plan if you need API access. Hubitat requires nothing.
