Smart home platforms: what each one actually decides
Your platform choice sets your radios, your automation ceiling, and how much of your house survives an outage.
The four things a platform decides#
Feature lists are the wrong way to choose. Four consequences matter, and they are hard to reverse later.
- Which radios you can buy for. Apple Home speaks Wi-Fi, Thread and Bluetooth, and nothing else. If you want Z-Wave locks, only Home Assistant, Hubitat, Homey and Aeotec-based SmartThings hubs will talk to them natively. Buying the device first and the platform second is the most common expensive mistake in this hobby.
- Where automations execute. On the hub in your hallway, or on a server in a data center. That single fact drives latency, privacy and outage behavior, and it is the difference between a command that stays in your house and a command that makes a round trip to a data center.
- What is left during an outage. Some platforms keep running everything except remote access. One keeps almost nothing. Our Local Control Index scores all seven against a published rubric.
- What it costs to leave. Devices commissioned into a fabric can usually be re-commissioned elsewhere, but scenes, automations, camera history and vendor features rarely move. Switching platforms without rebuying covers the order of operations.

Two things in that table surprise people. First, every one of the seven can act as a Thread border router, but the hardware requirements differ wildly: Amazon gets you one with almost any recent Echo or eero, while Hubitat needs a specific Thread model that gives up its Zigbee radio to do it. Second, Matter version support is not a quality ranking. Home Assistant runs the newest implementation and is not currently re-certified for it, while Google sits on Matter 1.3 device types and works perfectly well for lights and plugs.

The spread is the story. Home Assistant scores 100 and Alexa scores 5, and both are reasonable purchases for different households. What matters is knowing which one you bought before an outage teaches you.

Do I have to choose only one smart home platform?
No. Matter devices support multi-admin, which means one device can be commissioned into several fabrics at the same time and respond to all of them. Non-Matter devices are usually locked to one platform unless a hub bridges them. The common working pattern is one platform for voice and family access, another for automation logic. Which platform works best without internet?
Home Assistant, by a wide margin, because the cloud is an optional paid add-on rather than a dependency. Hubitat is close behind for the same reason. Apple Home keeps local automations running on its hub but loses Siri and remote access. Google Home and Alexa lose most functions. What still works when the internet goes down breaks it down device by device.
Does Matter mean the platform no longer matters?
No. Matter standardizes how devices and controllers talk, not what a controller can do with them. Automation logic, voice, cameras, energy features, notifications and history are all platform-specific, and none of them are in the specification.
Do I need a hub at all?
You need one if you want Thread or Zigbee devices, automations that run when your phone is away, or anything that keeps working during an outage. You can skip it if all you want is voice control of a handful of Wi-Fi devices. Do you need a smart home hub? walks the decision.
Is a Thread border router the same as a hub?
No, and this trips up a lot of purchases. A border router routes IPv6 between your Thread mesh and your LAN. A controller is what owns devices and runs automations. Many boxes are both, and some are only one.
How much should I expect to spend to get started?
Entry hub hardware in the US runs from about $99 for a Google Home Speaker or an Echo Dot Max, $129 for a HomePod mini, up to $199 for a Home Assistant Green before you add radios, and $449 for a Homey Pro 2026. Prices rose across the enthusiast tier in 2026, with vendors citing memory and storage costs.
