The cheapest way to get a lot of devices working, on the platform that keeps the least running when the internet does not.

What Alexa actually is#

Alexa is a cloud service with speakers attached. Devices, skills, routines and voice all resolve in Amazon's cloud, and the Echo in your kitchen is a microphone, a speaker and, on some models, a radio hub. That architecture is why the compatibility list is so long: any manufacturer can build a cloud-to-cloud skill without touching your network, and thousands have.

It is also a Matter controller and a Thread border router vendor, and on several Echo models a Zigbee coordinator. The combination of breadth and low hardware prices is genuinely hard to beat. A house with thirty devices from fifteen brands is more likely to work end to end on Alexa than on anything else here.

The hardware you actually need#

The critical fact is that not every Echo is a hub. Amazon sells Echo devices that carry no smart home radios at all, and they look and sound similar to the ones that do.

Amazon's own list puts most current border router models on Thread 1.3, with the Echo 4th generation at Thread 1.1. The eero coverage is the standout: if you already run eero for Wi-Fi, you probably already have Thread border routers throughout the house without knowing it. There is no Z-Wave anywhere in the Alexa hardware line, and never has been.

Matter and Thread status, September 2026#

Amazon's developer documentation states that Echo devices support the Matter 1.5 SDK and expose "a subset of Matter 1.5 and lower device types". That is a vendor statement, and it is worth attributing rather than repeating as a bare fact, because it does not translate directly into user-facing features. There is no evidence of user-facing Matter 1.5 cameras on Alexa as of September 2026.

Be careful with third-party comparisons here. Some press reporting places Alexa on Matter 1.0, which contradicts Amazon's own documentation. Both claims circulate; we cite Amazon's docs and note the disagreement rather than pick a winner. On Thread, the hardware breadth is unmatched and the software transparency is the worst of the seven. Alexa exposes almost no Thread diagnostics. You cannot see which node is routing for which, you cannot see link quality, and you cannot easily tell whether you have one Thread network or three. What survives an outage, and what does not#

Alexa scores 5 out of 100 on the Local Control Index, the lowest score we award. It earns 5 points out of 10 for local state reporting and zero on every other criterion: local app control, local automation, local voice, shutdown survivability, local API, firmware control and account requirement.

Keeps working. The devices themselves, at the protocol level. A Thread sensor still reports to its border router. A Zigbee bulb still holds its state. If you have a second controller on those devices through multi-admin, that controller may still reach them.

Stops working. Everything in the Alexa layer. Voice, because there is no on-device path. Routines. The app. Skills. Announcements and drop-in. Device groups. In an outage, an Echo is a Bluetooth speaker.

The single fact that anchors this is worth stating precisely: on 28 March 2025 Amazon removed on-device voice processing, deleting the "do not send voice recordings to the cloud" option from the three devices that had offered it. All voice now goes to the cloud, with no opt-out. That decision closed the only local path Alexa had, and it is a privacy question as much as a reliability one. The honest limitations#

No local anything. Covered above, but it deserves repeating because it is the whole trade.

No Z-Wave. If you own Z-Wave locks or sensors, Alexa cannot talk to them without another hub in the chain. Zigbee vs Z-Wave covers the choice if you are still buying.

Routine logic is basic. Triggers and actions, with limited conditions. It compares to Apple's editor rather than to Home Assistant's.

Skills rot. A cloud-to-cloud skill depends on the manufacturer maintaining it. When Belkin Wemo shut down on 31 January 2026, its Alexa and Google integrations disappeared with the app, while devices already paired to Apple HomeKit kept working locally. That contrast is the argument for local pairing in one sentence, and when a smart home company shuts down has the full case.

Developer surfaces are shrinking. The Smart Home API v2 was retired on 1 November 2025 and Routines Kit on 13 May 2026. If an integration you depend on was built on either, check that it has been rebuilt.

Sidewalk is on by default. Amazon operates a low-bandwidth shared network across Echo and eero devices that uses a slice of your bandwidth to extend coverage for participating devices. It can be turned off in the Alexa app, and whether you want it on is a judgment call rather than a defect.

Who should pick Alexa, and who should not#

Pick it if you want a lot of devices working for the least money, you want voice in every room, you value compatibility breadth over architectural purity, and an outage means inconvenience rather than a cold house. Prime members get Alexa+ at no extra cost, which makes the value proposition stronger still. For a first smart home built around lights, plugs and voice, it is a defensible choice, and your first five smart home devices sequences it.

Do not pick it as your only platform if anything must work offline, if privacy is a purchase criterion, if you own Z-Wave, or if you want visibility into your own Thread mesh. The standard fix is not to abandon Alexa but to demote it: run the automations on Home Assistant, Hubitat or SmartThings, and keep Echo devices for voice. Which Echo devices work as a smart home hub?

For Thread: Echo Dot Max, Echo Hub, Echo Studio, Echo 4th generation, Echo Plus 2nd generation, Echo Show 8, 10, 11, 15 and 21, plus most eero 6 and 7 routers. For Zigbee, a much shorter list: Echo 4th generation, Echo Show 8 3rd generation, Echo Show 10 3rd generation, Echo Dot Max and the 2025 Echo Studio. The standard Echo Dot and Echo Pop have no hub radios.

Does Alexa work without internet?

No, in any practical sense. Voice, routines, the app and every skill run in Amazon's cloud. Since Amazon removed on-device voice processing on 28 March 2025, there is no local speech path at all. Your Thread and Zigbee devices remain healthy at the protocol level, but nothing in the Alexa layer responds. Alexa scores 5 out of 100 on our Local Control Index.

What Matter version does Alexa support?

Amazon's developer documentation says Echo devices support the Matter 1.5 SDK and a subset of Matter 1.5 and earlier device types. Some press reporting says Matter 1.0, contradicting Amazon's own docs. Practically, the common device types work and there is no user-facing Matter 1.5 camera support. Treat the version as a vendor claim rather than a verified capability list.

How much does Alexa+ cost?

Alexa+ is included at no extra cost for Amazon Prime members and costs $19.99 a month otherwise. It became generally available in the US in February 2026. Basic Alexa functions remain available without it, but the conversational features that Amazon now markets sit inside Alexa+.

Can Alexa control Z-Wave devices?

Not without another hub. No Echo has ever had a Z-Wave radio. To use Z-Wave locks or sensors with Alexa you need a hub that owns them, such as Hubitat, Home Assistant, Homey Pro or an Aeotec SmartThings hub, and that hub then exposes them to Alexa. There is no standalone Z-Wave to Matter bridge dongle, so the hub is always the bridge.

Is Alexa a privacy problem?

It is a privacy trade you should make consciously. All voice goes to Amazon's cloud with no local option since March 2025, and routines and device state pass through the same servers. You can review and delete recordings in the Alexa privacy settings and turn off Sidewalk. If keeping voice inside the house is a requirement, only Home Assistant offers a fully local pipeline. Why does my Thread device pair to Alexa but drop later?

Alexa exposes almost no Thread diagnostics, so this is hard to diagnose from inside the app. The usual causes are the same as anywhere: mDNS not crossing your network, too few mains-powered Thread routers, channel congestion with Wi-Fi, or the device having joined a different Thread network than you expected. Work through Thread devices dropping or split networks.

Should I use Alexa for security devices?

Only with a backup plan. Locks, alarms and cameras that depend on Alexa routines stop responding to automation during any internet or Amazon outage, though a lock keypad still works and a camera may still record locally. If a device is genuinely safety-relevant, put its logic on a local controller and let Alexa be a convenience layer on top. Smart locks and the Aliro standard covers offline behavior by lock type.
