Filter the full list by ecosystem and Thread version. The notes column carries the details that cost people money.
How to choose one#
- Match the ecosystem to your platform. A border router that belongs to a different ecosystem will happily form a Thread network your controller cannot use. Pick hardware that is both a border router and a controller for the platform you actually use.
- Prefer Thread 1.4 hardware if you are starting now. Thread 1.4 introduced standardized credential sharing, which is the mechanism that lets a second border router join your existing network instead of forming another one. It is not automatic, but without it you have no mechanism at all. See why you have three Thread networks.
- Put it in the middle of the house, not in a cupboard. The border router is the root of the mesh. A border router in the basement next to the router is a common and avoidable coverage problem.
- One is usually enough. A second border router of the same ecosystem adds redundancy. A second border router of a different ecosystem usually adds a second network and a support problem.
The traps in the list#
- Apple TV 4K 3rd generation, 64 GB. No Thread radio. The 128 GB Wi-Fi plus Ethernet model has one.
- Hubitat C-8 and C-8 Pro. Zigbee and Z-Wave onboard, no Thread. Hubitat announced a Thread Special Edition that swaps out the Zigbee radio, so you pick one or the other rather than getting both.
- Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2. One protocol at a time. If you want Zigbee and Thread, budget two radios.
- Homey Pro 2026. Has a border router built in, but it forms its own Thread network rather than joining an existing one.
- Philips Hue Bridge. Zigbee only. It bridges Hue into Matter and carries no Thread at all.

Do I need a Thread border router?
Only if you own or intend to buy Matter over Thread devices. Matter over Wi-Fi devices need nothing extra, and Zigbee or Z-Wave devices need a hub with the matching radio instead.
Can I have more than one border router?
Yes, and in a large house you should, because it improves coverage and removes a single point of failure. The catch is that they need to be on the same Thread network. Same-ecosystem routers usually manage that. Different ecosystems usually do not, which is how households end up with several parallel meshes.
Is a Thread border router the same as a Matter controller?
No, and confusing the two is the most common misunderstanding in this area. The border router moves packets between the mesh and your LAN. The controller holds the fabric credentials and adds devices to your home. Some products are both, which is what makes the distinction easy to miss.
Where does the data in this tool come from?
Vendor documentation and ecosystem support pages, compiled in September 2026 and published as JSON under a Creative Commons license. Thread version reflects the newest publicly documented firmware, which is not always what shipped in the box.
